鉄道模型（ドーリッシュ）

このブログで前回お話をしました「ヨーク鉄道模型ショー」は、大変人気がありましたので、レイアウトをもう少し細かくご紹介しようと思います。

左は、イングランド南西部にある海岸沿いの町ドーリッシュのイメージです。もちろん、すべて手作りです。

模型の細部は驚くほど精密に作られていて、まるで、本当にそこにいるような錯覚に陥ります。

これは、実際に手に持って遊べる現代芸術作品とでも呼ぶべき代物です。ここで一言ご注意。ここでご紹介しましたレイアウトは、Ｏゲージですから、屋根裏、地下室または車庫に十分なスペースが必要です。ご注文なさる前に、必ずご確認ください。

このようなレイアウトをお持ちの方は、一生かけて鉄道模型を楽しめるだけでなく、次の世代にも引き継がれていくことになるでしょう。

第５０回 ヨーク鉄道模型ショー

暖かな４月のある午後、私は、桜の木の立ち並ぶ通りを、第５０回目のヨーク鉄道模型ショーに向かいました。毎年行われるこの鉄道模型ショーは今年で５０年目を向かえ、英国内でも、その長い歴史で知られています。

今年は、約１３０件の展示と４０台ものレイアウトが揃い、その上、業者や鉄道協会からも大勢の参加があり、非常に賑わったショーとなりました。英国内はもちろん、欧州各国からやって来るお客さんの数は、約８０００人にのぼります。

展示物は、１９００年代初頭の機関車から最近のものまで、小さな物としては、大人の親指ほどの大きさの、２ミリスケールの機関車など、サイズも種類も様々でしたが、中でも特に私の目をひいたのは、独シュヴァッハハウゼンのＯゲージのレイアウト（約９００ｘ７５ｃｍ）でした。それもそのはず、今年このレイアウトは、『バーナード・リッチモンド記念盾』賞を受賞したのです。

マラード号、グリーン・アロー

私の元同僚、ロビンが取ったユニークな写真です。ヨークの南を、マラード号とグリーン・アローが並んで、４７９９８号機に引っ張られているところです。

グリーン・アローは、１９３６年にロンドン＆イースタン鉄道のために製造された機関車で、LNERのクラスV2 2-6-2 の中で唯一現存するものです。

マラードは、１９３８年に製造されたロンドン＆ノースイースタン鉄道のクラス A4 4-6-2 パシフィック形蒸気機関車です。

Robin a former colleague of mine took these unique pictures passing south of York.  The “Mallard” is being hauled in tandem with the Green Arrow by 47998.  The Green Arrow is the last surviving member of LNER Class V2 2-6-2 steam locomotive, built in 1936 for the London and North Eastern Railway.  The Mallard London and North Eastern Railway Class A4 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive built in 1938. It still holds the world record for a steam train reaching 126mph in 1938.

英国鉄道遺産の旅１２：ケーブル鉄道、エリザベス女王ご訪問

今 年のツアーのお楽しみの１つは、スカーバラのケーブル鉄道です。１８８０年に建設された、長さ７１メートル、傾斜４５度のこのケーブル鉄道は、ビクトリア 朝の紳士・淑女が、英国初のホリディリゾート、スカーバラの丘の上から浜辺まで降りやすく（そして、あがりやすく！）するために造られました。

 

A surprise trip on our tour this year is a visit to the Scarborough Funicular Railway. A 71 m standard gauge track to a 1 in 2 gradient built in 1880. This goes the short distance to the seafront at Scarborough, Britain’s first holiday resort.

先週、ヨークを訪れた大勢の人たちに交じって、エリザベス女王、エジンバラ公、そしてお二人の孫娘ベタトリクス王女が、お越しになりました。今回のご訪問は、エリザベス女王の戴冠６０年記念のお祝いの一環で、同時に、ヨークミンスター大聖堂で、王室洗足式 (Royal Maundy) も行われました。王室洗足式 (Royal Maundy)というのは、１５世紀に始まった儀式で、その時の国王・女王が、選ばれた一般の男女に硬貨を与えるのです。

 Some welcome visitor’s to York this past week were Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth 2^nd, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh and their granddaughter Princess Beatrix. They were on a visit to England’s 2^nd city to celebrate the Queens 60^th anniversary of her accession to the throne, her “Diamond Jubilee” and to maintain an age old tradition of distributing “Royal Maundy” money in York Minster. It is a tradition dating back to the 15^th century where the reigning monarch gives a coin to nominated men and women.

私たちは硬貨 (Maundy Money) はいただきませんでしたが、ラッキーなことに、女王陛下がお乗りになった電車の写真を撮ることができました。

We were fortunate enough to catch a couple of photos of the Queen’s personal royal train as it made its way into York.

英国鉄道遺産の旅１１：北ヨークシャー荒野鉄道（ゴートランド駅）

I went to the North Yorkshire Wilderness Railroad this weekend when the weather was nice.

　

We visited Goathland Station, which we also visited on a trip tour of the British Railway Heritage.

This station is famous for appearing in Harry Potter's movies as Hogsmead Station, but it is also widely known as a station surrounded by beautiful nature.

Here we boarded the Southern 825, a London & Southwestern Railroad S15 class steam locomotive.

 We are currently adjusting the schedule so that more people can enjoy the tour.

国立鉄道博物館募金イベント、ロンドン日本料理店「祭」

　２月に、ロンドン、セント・ジェームズにある日本料理店「祭」で行われた、国立鉄道博物館のための募金イベントに参加しました。

In February I attended a fundraiser for the National Railway Museum at the famous Matsuri Japanese restaurant in London’s St James. 

　このレストランで最近行われたお祭りは、青森の「ねぶた祭り」でした。この恐い顔のお面が、入り口で待っています。

One of their recent celebrations was of the "Aomori Nebuta Festival” – this astonishing mask greets you on your visit.

　チャリティ・オークションとして、素晴らしい商品が出品されました。それは、最近きれいにお化粧なおしをした「フライング・スコッツマン」の機関手室に乗ることでした。

A charity auction was run and one of the most spectacular sales was a cab ride on the newly refurbished “Flying Scotsman”.

　日本料理が食べられ、世界的に有名な機関車を称えるばかりでなく、その機関手室に乗ることもできるなんて（一生に一度の大イベント！）、最高の募金イベントでした。

An excellent way to raise funds for the museum, have the best Japanese food in London,  celebrate one of the world’s most famous engines and have a ride of a lifetime.

ロンドン（キングズ・クロス駅、セント・パンクラス駅）

『英国鉄道遺産の旅』ツアーのお楽しみのひとつは、ロンドン・キングズ・クロス駅です。下の写真の青い足場の下の囲いの中に、９¾番線があります。これは、駅の工事に伴い、構外に移されたものです。

A key part of our tour is a visit to London Kings cross, here you can just about see the exhibit of platform 9 and ¾ beneath the blue scaffolding which has transferred outside the station during renovation.

上の写真には、見事なセント・パンクラス駅も写っています。ハリー・ポッターの映画では、この駅の前面がキングス・クロス駅として出てきます。

With St Pancras another spectacular station in the background. Its frontage doubles for Kings Cross in the Harry Potter movies.

誰も人がいない、珍しいキングズ・クロス駅の写真です。この夏のロンドン・オリンピックに向けての工事のため、人が入れなくなっているのでしょう。
