鉄道模型（ドーリッシュ）

このブログで前回お話をしました「ヨーク鉄道模型ショー」は、大変人気がありましたので、レイアウトをもう少し細かくご紹介しようと思います。

左は、イングランド南西部にある海岸沿いの町ドーリッシュのイメージです。もちろん、すべて手作りです。

模型の細部は驚くほど精密に作られていて、まるで、本当にそこにいるような錯覚に陥ります。

これは、実際に手に持って遊べる現代芸術作品とでも呼ぶべき代物です。ここで一言ご注意。ここでご紹介しましたレイアウトは、Ｏゲージですから、屋根裏、地下室または車庫に十分なスペースが必要です。ご注文なさる前に、必ずご確認ください。

このようなレイアウトをお持ちの方は、一生かけて鉄道模型を楽しめるだけでなく、次の世代にも引き継がれていくことになるでしょう。

 

ドーリッシュは、鉄道発祥地を訪れる鉄道遺産ツアーには含まれていませんが、ご興味がおありの方が大勢いらっしゃるようでしたら、イングランド南西部を訪れる鉄道遺産ツアーを特別に手配いたします。

英国鉄道遺産の旅１２：ケーブル鉄道、エリザベス女王ご訪問

今 年のツアーのお楽しみの１つは、スカーバラのケーブル鉄道です。１８８０年に建設された、長さ７１メートル、傾斜４５度のこのケーブル鉄道は、ビクトリア 朝の紳士・淑女が、英国初のホリディリゾート、スカーバラの丘の上から浜辺まで降りやすく（そして、あがりやすく！）するために造られました。

 

A surprise trip on our tour this year is a visit to the Scarborough Funicular Railway. A 71 m standard gauge track to a 1 in 2 gradient built in 1880. This goes the short distance to the seafront at Scarborough, Britain’s first holiday resort.

先週、ヨークを訪れた大勢の人たちに交じって、エリザベス女王、エジンバラ公、そしてお二人の孫娘ベタトリクス王女が、お越しになりました。今回のご訪問は、エリザベス女王の戴冠６０年記念のお祝いの一環で、同時に、ヨークミンスター大聖堂で、王室洗足式 (Royal Maundy) も行われました。王室洗足式 (Royal Maundy)というのは、１５世紀に始まった儀式で、その時の国王・女王が、選ばれた一般の男女に硬貨を与えるのです。

 Some welcome visitor’s to York this past week were Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth 2^nd, His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh and their granddaughter Princess Beatrix. They were on a visit to England’s 2^nd city to celebrate the Queens 60^th anniversary of her accession to the throne, her “Diamond Jubilee” and to maintain an age old tradition of distributing “Royal Maundy” money in York Minster. It is a tradition dating back to the 15^th century where the reigning monarch gives a coin to nominated men and women.

私たちは硬貨 (Maundy Money) はいただきませんでしたが、ラッキーなことに、女王陛下がお乗りになった電車の写真を撮ることができました。

We were fortunate enough to catch a couple of photos of the Queen’s personal royal train as it made its way into York.

英国鉄道遺産の旅１１：北ヨークシャー荒野鉄道（ゴートランド駅）

I went to the North Yorkshire Wilderness Railroad this weekend when the weather was nice.

　

We visited Goathland Station, which we also visited on a trip tour of the British Railway Heritage.

This station is famous for appearing in Harry Potter's movies as Hogsmead Station, but it is also widely known as a station surrounded by beautiful nature.

Here we boarded the Southern 825, a London & Southwestern Railroad S15 class steam locomotive.

 We are currently adjusting the schedule so that more people can enjoy the tour.

英国鉄道遺産の旅１０：エドワード７世御召列車

『Fit for a king（王様にも相応しい）』という表現は、エドワード７世のために製造されたこの客車から生まれた表現かも知れません（１９０３年）。

The phrase “fit for a king” could well originate from this carriage built for King Edward 7^th. Built in 1903.

この御召列車には、お風呂場や寝室も完備されていました。

This Royal Saloon car came fully equipped with a bathroom and bedroom

 
そして、外にはもちろん、観光客が・・・。

And the essential tourists outside your lounge room window.

『英国鉄道遺産の旅』ツアーの５日目に、この御召列車が展示されているヨーク市国立鉄道博物館を訪れます。これをご覧になれば、「豪華な旅」という言葉に、新しい意味が加わることでしょう。

When you see this in York’s NRM on day 5 of your tour it adds a new meaning to travelling in style.

英国鉄道遺産の旅９：英国国立鉄道博物館『魔法週間』

 
　今週は、世界的に有名なヨーク市の鉄道博物館、英国国立鉄道博物館（NRM）では、『魔法週間』が開催されています。

　研究のため（！）、ハリー・ポッターの映画からの『ホグワーツ・カッスル号』を見に行ってきました。

This week at the UK’s world famous National Railway Museum is “Wizarding” week, here in York..

In the interests of research I went along to see the Hogwarts Castle, the engine from the Harry Potter Movies.

豪快に蒸気をはきだす『ホグワーツ・カッスル号』は、見事な眺めでした。

It was in full steam – quite a spectacular sight.

 
『魔法週間』というくらいですから・・・博物館には、透明フクロウのクリスタルも来ていました！

As it was a “wizarding week” – the museum introduced us all to Crystal – the invisible Owl!

このフクロウは、『英国鉄道遺産の旅』ツアーの参加者でも見ることのできない展示物です。

This Owl you definitely won’t see when you visit the NRM on the Hozon Tetsudo tour!

英国鉄道遺産の旅８：スチーブンソンの『プラネット号』

『英国鉄道遺産の旅』ツアーで訪れるマンチェスター科学産業博物館のハイライトは、『プラネット号』に乗って、１９世紀の生活を体験することです。

A highlight of our visit to MOSI, Manchester’s Museum of Science and Industry is a chance to have a short ride on “Planet” experiencing life as it was in the 19^th Century.

これは、１８３０年にロバート・スチーブンソンによって製造された機関車の複製です（１９９２年）。レインヒル・トライアルで競争に勝ったスチーブンソンのロケット号は、更に改良され、世界初の大量生産機関車、『プラネット号』となりました。

This is a 1992 replica of the original 1830 engine built by Robert Stephenson. A consequence of “Stephenson’s Rocket” winning the Rainhill Trials was that it became the world’s first mass produced locomotive.

『プラネット９号』は、１８３０年１１月２３日に、リバプール＝マンチェスター間の５６ｋｍの路線を、１時間で走りました。

The “Number 9 Planet” covered the 56km Liverpool – Manchester route in 1 hour on 23 November 1830.
